Why Christmas Matters in a Season of Drift
Why does Christmas matter
and what does the coming of Christ mean for those of us who are trying to
remain faithful believers in a season of drift? In a Church that oftentimes
fails to boldly and clearly stand on the Word of God? The claim Scripture makes
of the eternal God taking on flesh and entering into human history has quietly
slipped out of favor.
Nevertheless, “The Word
became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). The God who spoke creation into
being and who holds all things together did not merely send advice from a
distance or correction from above. He CAME NEAR to us! He took on weakness and limitation;
and as a baby, became fully dependent on human care. Why? Because “the Word
made flesh” not only came close to us, but came to rescue this broken world
(and broken us).
So, celebrate this season with hope, not despair. Not because everything in this world and your life is going well, but because God’s redemptive work has never depended on favorable conditions. Celebrate this season with resolve, not retreat. Jesus didn’t run away from this broken world, He entered into it. That is our calling as well, living faithfully and visibly without panic. Making disciples. Being Spirit-filled witnesses. Finally, celebrate this season with gratitude, not entitlement. We did not earn Christmas, nor deserve His nearness; yet He still came. And God continues to be faithful! God’s grace continues to lavish on us through our Savior and Lord!
Merry Christmas!
